After a death

Making necessary funeral arrangements

At Alex Black Funeral Care we understand that the passing of a loved one can be incredibly overwhelming, which is why we are here to help guide you through this emotional and often stressful time. Below we have outlined some of the key information you may need but should you require any additional help, feel free to get in touch.

Registering the death

Once you have been issued with the medical death certificate (from either the local doctor if the person has passed away at home, or from the hospital doctor) then you should register the death at a registration office. In Scotland, you are able to register the death at any registration office.

Click here for a list of local registry offices and their contact details.

You can register the death with just the medical death certificate but if you are in possession of the follow, it will speed matters along;

  • The deceased’s birth and marriage certificate;
  • The deceased’s NHS medical card;
  • Any documents relating to the receipt of a pension or allowance from government funds.
Along with the official extract of death entry certificate you will be given a Form 14 – this should be brought to us as soon as possible.

Procurator Fiscal involvement

If the death has been referred to the Procurator Fiscal you will not be able to register the death until the Procurator Fiscal grants permission and issues the death certificate. You can still contact us to make the funeral arrangements but no firm bookings can be made until after the death certificate has been issued.

If there is to be a Post Mortem, again we can be contacted and funeral arrangements can be discussed, but no firm bookings can be made for the date of the funeral. Following the post mortem, a death certificate will be issued and the death should be registered as above.

Further information about what to do following a death including information on wills, estate etc. can be found here; http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Resource/Doc/213661/0056769.pdf
